Christmas Music Genres

There are many Christmas music genres to choose from, and no matter your taste, there’s a song for you. From classic carols to modern favourites, here’s a guide to some of the most popular Christmas music genres.

  • Christmas Carols: If you’re looking for traditional holiday tunes, look no further than carols. Carols take many different forms, from early medieval chants to romantic ballads written centuries later, but they all share one common goal: bringing joy to listeners at Christmastime. There are plenty of carol options, so find the ones that appeal to you, and get ready to sing along!
  • Traditional Folk Music: Just because Christmas falls on a Sunday this year doesn’t mean that traditional folk music has to disappear. Plenty of folksongs about winter celebrations and Christmas lore are still being sung today, and they make a great accompaniment to a festive dinner or party. If you want something a little more contemporary, check out some well-known holiday hits like “Let It Snow” by John Denver or “The First Noel” by Henry Purcell.
  • Christian Rock: Christian rock is usually associated with worship concerts in churches on Sundays (hence its name), but the genre has branched out over time into secular music. That said, there’s nothing wrong with including a little Christian rock in your Christmas playlist – after all, it’s a pretty big holiday event! Some of our favorite secular Christian rock

Christmas is a time for family, friends, and of course, music. Whether you’re looking to add festive cheer to your day or want to get in the mood for the holidays, there’s no better way than with some great tunes. Here are our top tips for finding the perfect Christmas music:

  1. Start by narrowing down your options. Listening to everything on Spotify can be tempting, but that can quickly become overwhelming. Instead, start by browsing your favorite album genres and playlist styles – classical pieces or holiday albums are great examples – and see which ones appeal to you most.
  2. Be selective about what you buy. Yes, it’s nice to have all your favorite holiday songs at your fingertips. Still, if you overspend on iTunes downloads, you’ll only end up frustrated a few weeks into December when those tracks don’t seem to be playing as often as you’d like them to (and that Christmas-y Muzak will start getting on your nerves). Stick to downloading tracks from reputable sources such as Amazon or Spotify so that you know they’ll last longer than a month before being replaced by something new (you can also rent videos rather than buying them outright if this is more convenient for you).
  3. Don’t forget about Pandora! Streaming services aren’t the only place where good old-fashioned radio listening can pay off; Pandora has an ever-growing collection of seasonal music specifically tailored for the Christmas season that’s sure to please everyone in your household (plus it’s free!). If using a streaming service isn’t your thing, consider picking up an MP3 player, such as an iPod or CD player, specifically designed for holiday listening. They make great gifts!
